Feature Feedback: Duplicate Speaker Issue and Merge Request

·
·

Hello. I love the update to the change and rename speakers. It makes it a lot more seamless to search and update the speaker. However, I have one problem where if I search an existing name and press "enter" (because I got used to that sequence when creating a new speaker name), it creates a new speaker rather than selecting one of the existing names. It makes sense why "enter" would produce the same result irrespective whether there's a matching existing contact or not, but because that was kind of a habituated next step to press enter, I generated a lot of duplicates of the same name. Am I able to somehow merge those duplicates to the previously existing one? I can't seem to find a way

Hi Alia, I'm Michal, the developer who worked on these changes. Thank you for the very valuable feedback on these UI changes. You're 100% right - the current way this dropdown works makes it way too easy to accidentally create a new contact when you just want to search for and select an existing one. I'll be looking into tightening up the experience here to reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Hi Alia Knightbird, Thanks so much for picking that up! We’ve actioned a bug request related to that, and Michal Swierczynski dovetail will be fixing it up soon. Regarding the merging ability, at the moment, you can merge speakers in a transcript, but you’re not able to merge Contacts themselves. I’ve added a linear feature request ticket to ensure this gets prioritised. To merge speakers within the transcript, first unlink the contacts you don’t want associated with the data, then assign them to the contact you want to be the primary. This will bring up the “Merge participants in transcript” dialog, which will ask you to confirm that all instances of Participant X will be merged with the primary contact you're assigning. Once you click confirm, you can delete the unused contacts within Contacts. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions put-the-customer-first

Glad to see this is getting fixed! Also, a related issue: If I add a contact field in the data fields, it shows only contacts (which does make sense). However, a lot of people in my company have been using this feature to tag themselves as facilitators in studies. This then creates the same person as a 'contact' and 'Dovetail user'. Could the contacts field work the same way as the new speaker selection?

Hi Juhani, Great call out! We've created a Linear ticket to track this as a feature request for enabling "User" in data fields. It’s helpful to understand how people are using participant assignment. Appreciate the insight, we’ll keep you posted!
