Urgent Request: Anonymization Features for Dovetail's Professional Plan | Dovetail Champions

I’d like to chime in with agreement. A few years ago, my organization made a strategic decision not to handle data privacy a certain way because we expected, based on everything we had been hearing, that privacy features would be coming. But instead, they are gate-kept at the enterprise level, which we cannot afford. It’s incredibly disappointing, and just one of many reasons I do not have the faith or enthusiasm with Dovetail that I did a few years ago.

I also agree with this. We are a large organization who was just told that we must have the privacy functions to adhere to GDPR, but out department does not have the budget to pay for the full enterprise solution. We are already told that Dovetail licenses are too expensive for the departments, so adding the cost to the users is absolutely not feasible. I think this is an EU thing. If Dovetail wants to win on the EU market, GDPR compliance cannot be locked down in extremely expensive plans. It should be standard in every plan available..

Hi Rhyan, Thanks so much for taking the time to share this thoughtful feedback — I completely understand how important it is for your team to meet data protection requirements and keep participant information secure. End users are responsible for workspace governance in Dovetail, but we provide several features to help make that easier at scale — including data retention settings, access control, and redaction tools — all designed to help protect personally identifiable information (PII) and reduce organizational risk. Workspace admins on Enterprise plans can also set custom retention periods at both the workspace and project level, which helps automate the deletion of unneeded PII over time. That said, I realize this may not be the ideal setup for your current plan. At the moment, these data protection features are only available on the Enterprise plan, and there isn’t currently a way to reupload recordings while keeping existing tags, highlights, and insights. For now, anonymization would need to be managed manually as you’ve been doing. If it’s helpful, I’d be happy to connect you with our team to talk through what an upgrade path might look like. Hi Jazmin thank you for your response. I have already been in contact with your sales team and scoped out the possibility of a an Enterprise plan upgrade, but that is far out of reach for us and the scale of our business. Most of the features you provide in the Enterprise plan would go unused anyway for what we are trying to accomplish with Dovetail. I understand that you're not the one making the calls about what features are available and to what subscription tier, but this feels like a huge miss as a business opportunity, especially for the European market. I've invested a lot of company time into manual anonymization methods, which we would have much rather spent on even a slightly higher "mid-tier" Dovetail subscription if these anonymization features were made available to us. Our company puts a strong importance on data protection of our research participants, but it's also a legal requirement in the EU. Without these features, Dovetail is practically useless once the data retention policy expires. This seems like such a silly reason to have to change tools, but if these features do not become available it looks like we're going to need to look for a new product that supports our research database needs.
